I teach first grade at an older, urban school where many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school and as a result, we lack the resources and opportunities of many other schools. Many of my students are deemed at-risk. Nine of them are over 1.5 years below grade level.
My kids are the most wonderful kids in the world, and school is everything to them.
My students attend school in one of the most multicultural districts in the United States and many of them are English language learners who have recently arrived in this country and they all work very hard because they want to learn.
Many of my students do not have money for basic supplies, but that doesn't stop them from trying to learn everything they can. I may teach students who are struggling, but they all want to learn because they want to be successful.
My Project
I know that many of my first graders come from homes where parents are struggling to put food on the table and some can't afford basic supplies or snacks and I want to help all of them succeed, but unfortunately, I cannot afford to personally purchase everything that my students need.
I need your help to provide my students with some snacks so they can have enough energy to concentrate during our long afternoons.
My students eat lunch at 11:30 and in the afternoon, they are starving. They cannot concentrate. They need a small, yummy snack so they can keep learning.
I firmly believe that children need to work very hard. My students try very hard every day. In my classroom, a snack is more than a snack. It is a teachable moment. We read the packaging. We study the nutrition facts. We count and graph the different snacks and we practice healthy, safe food handling. Every week, two students are the snack keepers who use the manners they have learned to distribute the snacks.
We will use the disinfecting wipes to clean our desks and our hands.
