This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come into first grade in August rearing to learn. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including students from other countries and who speak more than one language.
My school and classroom also continue to be a high-poverty school of around 95%, but that doesn't stop them from trying their best and persevering through difficult times, both in and outside of the classroom.
They are curious, motivated learners who enjoy showing off what they have learned and what they can do.
My Project
Based on research, my students will be participating in several home-school literacy connection projects this year. This DonorsChoose.org grant will help with both family message journals and family literacy backpacks. Family message journals are sent home on Fridays, after the students write in them about what they did over the course of the week at school. Then, families are invited to write back to their child. The process continues every week throughout the school year, and in the meantime, families are very aware of what their child is doing in school.
Literacy Backpacks are linked with our science standards (NGSS) and also go home on Fridays.
They include a book on whatever we are studying, a journal, and a stuffed animal. They will read and write about what we are studying with their families and return to school. The journal will stay in the same backpack all year, so each family can see what other families are learning about!
