Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First graders use hands-on experiences to learn. I believe that learning centers are very important for first graders, and at our charter school we value student-directed learning. As first graders have already learned the basics of reading, they are now testing their abilities in writing. I want to facilitate a child-centered writing center in our room where students can practice their writing skills. In order to motivate the students, I want to provide my students with hands-on writing experiences at the writing center. For us to develop an engaging and challenging writing center, we need several items. We need two writing folders for each student: one for drafts and one for publishing. I'd like for all of these folders to be the same color, so the students are able to identify the folders as "writing folders." In total, we would need 52 folders. The students will also need "quiet story starters," which are essentially dice with story starters. We would need colored pens, markers and colored pencils for writing and correction. The students will also benefit from reference tools and student dictionaries such as "My Writing Words" books. Lastly, I would need a book called “Story Sparks” for those writers that just cannot get a good start. Each of these items would create a great writing center for first graders. As my students finish first grade, they are ready to write. My students need various opportunities to guide them in good writing tasks.
