My Students

My students come to school everyday excited and ready to learn. I greet each of them at the door with a smile and a handshake. Our classroom is all about growing a little more each day! We are growing academically and socially.

Each student has a different background and a unique experience at school, students have lot of different motivators that drive their learning and attitude toward school.

My challenge is to make school fun, and develop an intrinsic motivation within my students. A love of learning, and pride in showing their work and growth is my ultimate goal for each kiddo. I also strive to help my students make connections to real world experiences. Some of my students come from low income households where they do not have access to quality literature, school supplies and new technologies used at school. Our community is diverse and nearly 50% of our students receive free lunch.

My Project

The building supplies this project would bring to our classroom will help my students experience the freedom to build, explore, and problem solve. My students will work in partners and teams to collaborate with their peers to plan, design and execute ideas. The blocks, marble run, and other building sets will be used during designated STEM time where students will focus on the design process.

With the building blocks, tinkertoys and other supplies, my students will be guided in planning, problem solving, and reflection as they work together to accomplish a task.

The collaboration aspect of STEM lends itself to helping students develop social emotional skills, Learning how to speak with partners, share materials and ideas, and work as a team are valuable lessons that will carry over to other areas of school and life for my young students.

Some of the other materials, including the Playdoh and Legos, will be used in many other areas of the classroom in addition to STEM. They will be used as hands on manipulatives that add an interactive and engaging elements to word work and math workshops. Students using Playdoh and Legos will be developing fine motor skills while building letters to match words, or to represent sounds during phonemic awareness. They will also be used to act out math problems.
