My students need sensory tools like weighted hoodies and a lap pad, fidgets, and headphones in our classroom in order to do their best learning and thinking!

My Students

I have the ultimate pleasure of working with smart, enthusiastic and hard-working first graders in a Title 1 school in NYC. My class is part of an inclusive program with some students on the autism spectrum and some neurotypical learners. My students care for one another in a way that I find inspiring. My students enjoy a balance of high-energy activities and movement breaks along with time to relax and read around the room. Sensory and multiple ways of learning play a big role in my classroom.

My Project

I believe it is important to teach the whole child and be aware of individual needs. It is my goal to expose and teach my students to use tools and practices that will help them to self-regulate in our classroom. In order to do this I would need some sensory tools to help address their needs.

Each of these products would be helping a young child find out what their body needs in order to regulate their body and do their best learning.

The hearing protectors will help with any loud noises, bells or assemblies. The pea pod will be a helpful place for them to regulate their bodies or to help them enjoy reading a book. In addition, the desk fidget will help my students be in control of when they need more sensory input. All of these tools together will make a huge impact on the lives of my young students.
