Our school is located in a struggling neighborhood within a larger urban district striving to make significant gains in math and literacy.
More specifically, our school is in a transitional period, as we have adopted a turn-around improvement plan to move from the bottom 5% of schools in the state to the top 25% in just three years.
Despite living in an impoverished neighborhood with limited familial resources, it is the goal of my classroom to provide students with every necessary resource needed to master first grade skills.
My Project
My students need the interactive Hot Dots reading and math question sets and interactive pens to build the skills necessary to complete assessments with confidence . I am requesting an interactive literacy and math question set called Hot Dots. This technology allows students to practice answering multiple choice questions independently.
This is an invaluable resource, because as early as first grade students are expected to complete standardized tests at the end of the year. As standardized test taking skills are not part of the core curriculum, many teachers are forced to spend valuable instructional time teaching these skills before the test is taken at the end of the year.
By incorporating Hot Dots into daily center routines, students will have seven months to gain familiarity with a multiple choice format. The innovative approach of Hot Dots allows students to practice and perfect these skills during normal instruction with the helpful verbal guidance it provides.
While a teacher works with small groups, students are expected to be in charge of their own learning at different centers around the room.
I believe the Hot Dots reading and math program has the ability to engage students and invest them in their own learning.
