In my First Grade Family class in Jamaica Queens we have children who receive Public Assistance, live in shelters, and who struggle with adjusting to school life. In my classroom I like to create an environment where they can forget about everything else that might be going on in their lives and just have fun while learning. I encourage that our class is their home away from home (their safe place). Students become responsible, engage, and confidence increases throughout the course of the school year.
Science and Social Studies help my first graders become responsible decision makers not only in the classroom but in life.
During each school day Social Studies and Science are integrated with Language Arts. This gives students to experience hands on learning as well as current events.
Student engagement is key !
My Project
By incorporating Scholastic magazines into my balanced literacy program, students' knowledge and reading skills will improve. Students will learn about character education traits as well as current events. Each week our class will focus on the current event and create a news board showing what they have learned. I would also add this to our class website under current events. Each month we will focus on the character ed trait for that month and practice it in our daily lives as well as create a project each month about that trait. Children will show what they have learned through daily actions and projects.
