My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Close to 70% of my students live below the Federal Poverty Level. When my 1st-grade students walk into my classroom I strive to provide for them an inviting, caring, and exciting learning experience. With so many personalities and such diverse home lives, it can be difficult to make the transition to a learning environment. Yet once they are comfortable, they can work at something that seemed so difficult to them at first and then it happens...they get it! Now they are motivated to work hard and learn more. There is nothing more rewarding than the look of accomplishment on a 1st-grade child's face.

My Project

My first graders love listening to books on tape, but hate the wires that connect them to one place. The wireless headphones will allow them to sit in a comfy spot with their book and follow along as the narrator reads.

Listening to books on tape provides a model of fluent reading to the children listening.

In first grade we work on fluency in reading daily. Listening to stories will help my students to develop a sense of narrative structure and provide an opportunity for them to learn new vocabulary words.

Listening to a book on tape makes a story come alive for those listening.
