My students need one iPad mini and a protective case in order to begin coding and problem solving in the classroom.
Curiosity and learning is the atmosphere I strive to create in my classroom every day. I want my first grade students to know the joy of learning and the excitement of discovery. I want them to learn how to problem solve and become life long learners.
My school is located in one of the poorer neighborhoods in San Diego County.
It is a neighborhood school. Many are second language learners. They come from low socioeconomic families that are struggling to make ends meet. Multiple families may live in the same apartment or house with children sleeping on the couch or floor. Many parents work two or more jobs and are scarcely getting by. During the school week, every child is provided with a minimum of two hot meals a day (school breakfast and school lunch) and our local food bank delivers backpacks of food so that kids will have food for the weekend. Despite these challenges, my students come to school everyday with smiles on their sweet faces and an eagerness to learn.
Our classroom received a TTS BlueBot floor robot. However, we are unable to take full advantage of it’s capabilities without an iPad. Our first grade class needs one iPad with protective case in order to use the BlueBot to it’s fullest potential. This is a wonderful tool to teach coding. Students will be learning estimation, sequencing, and problem solving. They will also be having fun while learning how to do it! "Play is the highest form of research." -Albert Einstein. While working in small cooperative groups, students will learn communication skills, observe, formulate questions, plan and make decisions together, and record their data. These skills overlap into all learning. Through inquiry and using these two learning tools together, students will gain new knowledge about coding patterns and then taking that knowledge and applying it to problem solving.
This project will make a difference to my students in the way they look at technology, how they work cooperatively with others and problem solve.
As teachers we work hard every day to give our students knowledge, skills and strategies to have successful school careers. Teaching them to think logically, problem solve and express themselves in a way that others understand are skills we all need. Your help is greatly appreciated and will give these young learners a great start to their school career.
