Help me give my students the tools to collaborate and use their creative minds to build, construct, design, and play! The two-shelf storage cabinet will help organize all of the STEAM tools requested in this project.

My first graders are energetic, motivated, and enthusiastic.
They are diverse academically, linguistically, and culturally. Many of my students do not have access at home to use tools like these requested in this project. Students have access to some flexible seating options where they can pick a "smart seat" for whatever activity we are working on. I believe students should have a voice and a choice in what seating option works best for them. Like adults, children learn best when they are comfortable. I love that my students take ownership of their learning and have a voice in their classroom. Along with the flexible seating, my students practice goal setting, which has really helped teach and practice daily teamwork and collaboration. My students practice teamwork, collaboration, creative thinking, kindness, and hard work daily, which are skills that will be beneficial for using the requested brain bin materials and storage unit in this project.
My Project
First graders love to use their creativity to build and design. I would like to create "brain bins" for my students to use as their morning work time or for students who may finish work early. The Common Core State Standards and The Next Generation Science Standards both emphasize how critical listening, speaking, and communicating about mathematical and scientific concepts are. Integrating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) and literacy tools help students identify and understand key concepts better (Lorey, 2017). STEAM topics require students to interpret technical texts, acquire content-specific vocabulary, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate verbally and in writing these complex concepts (Kaczmarek, 2016).
By donating to our project, you will provide the opportunity for my first-grade engineers to engage in building, designing, and thinking critically while using STEAM tools on a daily basis for their morning work.
I have some tools in my classroom that I have already purchased with my own money like a variety of sizes of LEGOs, magnetic tiles, wooden blocks, and puzzles. I am requesting funds for more tools like dado squares, interlocking tools, Squigz, foam dominoes, tinker toys, story cubes, I spy books, letter making, and a construction set will provide my first-grade engineers with a variety of building tools to work together collaboratively to build, create, and play.
