This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently teaching a first grade class in San Pedro, California. Point Fermin Elementary is a small diverse school with approximately 330 students. Being such a small school we are often overlooked and our budget is very small. Over the summer my 9 year old stained and frayed rug was taken away and dumped. It was thought that our Parent-Teacher Organization was going to be able to cover the cost of the getting me a new rug. Sadly it was not true and I was left without a rug to start off the new year. I went to the store thinking that I was going to buy one but was taken back by the cost. I walked away with a 6ft by 7ft. rug that was very thin. The students are uncomfortable and some are left to sit on the hard floor. The rug area is such an important gathering place in the lower grades. We spend a lot of time there working on language arts, math, and oral discussions. My students would greatly appreciate a new rug. This is not a want but a necessity for students. Thank you for your help.
