My students need reading, writing, and math centers and flip books that will help differentiate instruction which leads to large gains in student progress!
Frustrated and bored are two things that shouldn't happen in my classroom. This first week of school I could already see that I have first graders at various levels in Reading and Math. Having centers that are engaging and effective are crucial for a successful period of small group instruction!
My students are a group of diverse learners and personalities!
At our World Language school students come ready to not just learn content. They are also excited to learn a second language maybe even a third language! These first graders are a motivated group of students that really respond to engaging lessons and activities.
My Project
During small group instruction students will use these reading and math centers to practice skills at their own level of mastery. These centers can be used by a small group of students or on an individual basis. These engaging centers also help with classroom management while I teach different small groups during math and reading. During center time students will have valuable practice applying skills and learning new skills when meeting with the teacher for small group instruction. For example students who are still working on basic math addition or subtraction can do so while more advanced students can start practicing their geometry skills because they have already mastered basic addition and subtraction. Having activities that engage the students on skills at their level gives me the valuable time of working with my small group of students. I teach them new skills while the others practice reading and math at their own level of mastery to continue progress at their own pace.
After 7 years of teaching in predominantly 3rd and 5th grade, I am experiencing my very first year teaching in first grade.
The materials I have acquired over the past several years do not meet my students instructional levels. I can't begin to explain how daunting it is to have so many resources but none for the grade level I now teach. Due to devastating budget cuts in our district the funds are not present for these additional materials and resources.
