My students need a way to learn the expectations, rules, and where to find material in the classroom which will be taught through an interactive and team-building activity.
Chemistry is a class that so many students walk into on the first day dreading. They have a preconceived idea of the difficulty of the class and have already decided they won't understand. Many adults that I talk to also shutter at their memory of their time in chemistry. I believe that chemistry has true value in every student's life, but there is reason for the hesitancy people face when stepping into the chemistry classroom.
I want every one of my student who walks into the first day of chemistry to feel empowered to tackle this difficult subject with all the tools readily available to them.
I will do my best to provide material that is accessible, hands-on, and differentiated for each of my students, but I need help in my first year teaching to supply my students with the tools they need. I will be teaching a general chemistry class with mixed abilities, home languages, and a range of socioeconomic status. I student taught at this school last year, and I know, given the chance, each and every one of my students will rise to meet the challenge of the difficult content and succeed in this class.
My Project
I will be teaching general chemistry with a new project-based curriculum. This means that students will be working in groups for the majority of the year, and it is important to set up group work expectations early on. It is also important to introduce the classroom safety expectations early on so that students know how to safely carry out projects.
To both teach the safety and procedural expectations of the classroom and build team work within the class, on the first day of school the class will be participating in a Break-In Box activity.
There will be a main box that whole class must eventually break into, but first the class will be split into four groups. Each group will have a box with a lock on it. Students will be given clues that lead them around the classroom, through the class syllabus, and to the class website. As students break into their group boxes, the information found inside can then be combined with other groups' to break into the class box. The activity ends when all groups have successfully broken into their group boxes and the class has broken into the class box. The boxes, locks, and hasps are the material that I need to set up the activity.
