I have a diverse group of 25 Kindergarten students. All their parents want to help their child during this time of distance learning but lack physical tools to do this. Our school checked out Chromebooks to every family that requested one. For my class, I gave them journals, pencils and crayons along with packets of daily skill work in reading and math and have sent emails every Friday with two writing projects along with theme videos and an exercise video to keep them moving. I still have a handful of students that just can't get started with these packets. I have met with whole class and small groups to connect with them and help those who are feeling lost. Many of my students are also reading on Raz Kids and participating in SeeSaw activities in addition to our school supplied programs. I just do not have parents and children that are comfortable with all the technological aspects of distance learning and missing that contact with their friends and teacher.
My Project
Every year starting in April and continuing to the end the school year, I start reading chapter books with my Kindergarten students. We read one chapter and then talk about the characters, make connections and share our thoughts and ideas about what may happen tomorrow when we read the next chapter. I would like to continue this during this time of distance learning. I would like each of my students to have their own copy. Right now, the majority of my students do not have their own books and rely on online books for their reading materials. I have a few that are not reading the online books they have access to.
I would LOVE to give each of my students a copy of my two favorite engaging, beginning chapter books that they can read at home with their parents, read along during our Zoom meetings, listen to me read aloud to them and have discussions in small class "book clubs".
I know my students will love this new addition to our distance learning Zoom meetings and they will have a book of their own to read with their family. I also hope this will entice them to want to read more! Plus, we will tie in our opinion writing to these books and learn to site evidence to support our opinions, learn about author's purpose and hopefully, look forward to reading more of the series for each of these books.
Thank you so much for reading our proposal and hopefully supporting my book loving students.
