My Students
Do you remember the first time you found yourself lost in a story? Can you recall the images that flashed through your mind as you became more and more interested in the characters and setting as the plot unfolded? Many of my students have never had that experience. I'd like to change that for them!
My third graders are a very diverse group from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
They are eager to learn, but they almost always need encouragement to read independently. Most of our reading in the classroom is structured. They may read non-fiction for information or read fiction for details. All the while, we are working to give them the strategies they need to become better readers and have a more in-depth understanding of the material they read. In my class, our book nook includes lots of books. Unfortunately, many of these books were passed down to me when I first started teaching 10 years ago. It was a great gift then, but 10 years later, my youngsters need more. I've made additions to the reading area when funds were available, but I would love to have more fun books for my students.
My Project
The introduction of e-readers has made reading more interesting for adults all over the world. I'd love to be able to provide e-readers in class and fill them with up-to date stories for my students! There are so many current chapter books that I'm certain would keep my students engaged in reading independently for their enjoyment! Our children are growing up during a time when technology is constantly improving. They spend hours playing video games, watching movies, and downloading music. When they search for the answer to a question, they donâÂÂt pick up an encyclopedia, instead they Google it. Children today are as uninterested in old books as they are in watching old black and white movies. They will learn to appreciate the classics later on in life. At this age, it's important to spark their interest reading using highly engaging stories on their reading level.
Children need to know adults read for information and have fun reading about people or things that interest us.
This is a critical year for their reading fluency. In order to kick their love of reading into high gear, we have to present stories in a way they find relevant and intriguing. Your donation will help these children far beyond third grade. This will help us nurture a love of reading that will benefit our children throughout their lifetime!
