My students just get better and better every year. They appreciate the tools they have been given and see the impact of DonorsChoose.org projects every time a new box is delivered to the school. These students, who range from middle-class families to homeless families, love music class and I couldn't possibly be filled with more joy than when I get to see them learn, grow, and create in class. Our school is Title I, and many depend on the school for breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack provided by aftercare.
My students are incredible music makers, and I want them to have all of the tools to make their efforts sound amazing.
I have been aware of Firesticks for a few years now, and always thought they were cool... but I couldn't think of a way to justify such a big purchase. It wasn't until I watched an amazing colleague have her performing groups do contrasting rhythms in two colors of firesticks that it clicked (pun intended.)
My students have all kinds of learning styles, and firesticks can help me reach out to my visual learners.
The items I am requesting react to how a person plays dynamically. Light taps flow faintly, while firmer hits glow bright and bold - connecting a students action with a visual which can't be seen with a typical wooden drumstick or mallet. The two colors can represent different rhythms, giving yet again another visual for students to see how parts interact with each other.
