My students are first graders who are eager to learn! I teach at a school in Portland, Oregon. While much of Portland is not that diverse, there are five different home languages in my classroom. Students share their kindness, enthusiasm, and ideas with each other to grow their thinking as engaged learners.
My first graders are passionate about learning, and love to read and learn in community.
Since it isn’t possible for us to be together right now, I need to send more emergent readers home, as these early readers are hard to find, and the public library is currently closed. My students are curious about the world and need books in their hands. Reading on a screen is not the same as cuddling up with a parent, a stuffy, or a pet to read a book in a cozy corner.
My kids are also advancing mathematicians! Students in the early grades need hands-on math tools, and to learn math through games, not just screen learning. I need more math manipulatives to send home during distance learning.
My Project
The books will be distributed to each of my students during a monthly supply pick up at school. Once the kids finish reading the books in their book bag, they will likely be ready for the next level of books, and they will turn the books in to be read and loved by another student. First graders get fired up for reading when they discover a series or character that they love, so I would like to provide them with a wide variety of fiction book titles so that they can find the character that sparks their love of reading.
First graders do best with hands-on learning.
I am also hoping to fund a class set of rek-n-reks, which enable students to easily see quantities to 20 and partition 20 into 4 groups of 5. They can be used to learn doubles, doubles plus one, fast tens, and many other addition and subtraction strategies. The base ten materials are fantastic for teaching place value and double digit addition and subtraction. The dice and dry erase markers are essential tools for distance learning, so the kids can show their learning by playing games and using their whiteboards at home.
