My classroom is an elementary school library. All students in the building, kindergarten through fifth grade, come to the library each week to check out books, do research, and learn technology skills. My school is located in Port Orchard.
We have over 460 students at our school that visits the library weekly.
Our school population has over 40% of our students are eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program. All students are equal when it comes to learning and all of my students deserve every advantage I can give them.
My Project
All our students are excited about coding. We have 3 Dash robots, but only one iPad to control them and therefore only one robot can be used at a time. Unfortunately, we do not always have the iPad because of different reasons and on those days the robots just sit in their charging stations. I regularly have at least 6 students that come in daily to use the robots and they take turns with the iPad and one robot while the other 2 robots sit at their charging stations. When 6 or more students are trying to code one robot there is a lot of arguing. As a result no one is really learning the skills they need for coding. The 3 Amazon Fires will allow 3 students or 3 pairs of students to code the robots. The iPad can then be used for the Bloxels that we currently have, but have not been able to use. Bloxels is also a coding program where one student uses cubes to create a picture and the other student uses the iPad to turn it into a digital program. The Code & Go Robot Mouse will allow those younger students to learn the very beginning steps of coding. This is Perfect for my kindergartners and first graders.
All of these will help my students to work on their collaboration skills and will allow them to actually be able to learn to code.
