This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The demographics at my school consist of 65% African-American students, 30% Latin-American students and 2% European-American students. Of those students, 11% are English Language Learners and 33 % are students with special needs.
Many of my families are low-income earners and some live in transitional housing.
My students come from single parent households and multi-generational homes. The pandemic has definitely been difficult but this year the students smiling eyes show their eagerness and child like inquisitive nature has not been dampened.
My hope is for my speech and language impaired students to have the supplies that can encourage them to strive harder and give them additional access to the curriculum.
My Project
In this community where children have limited access to technology, the Kindle Fire tablets will allow my students to use the technology as a tool to access knowledge and develop their speech skills. Students can access text and written information by using the text-to-speech feature in the Kindle Fire tablets. This feature will support them as they listen to stories read aloud and give them opportunities to work independently. This will build reading comprehension for students who have difficulty reading fluently. Students can hear and see the text at the same time.
My project will allow the speech students to receive everyday practice in building their auditory comprehension and oral and written expression!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
