My students need books that act as "windows and mirrors", that is windows into other worlds and mirrors into their own. The books I've chosen here will be the perfect addition to our classroom library!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is intended for a classroom that works with students who live and learn in the Mission District of San Francisco. They face many challenges and have incredible potential. Our school has strong families and strong teachers. We are lucky to have such a supportive community for our students.
My students are curious and dedicated learners.
They work hard, they are kind, and they are interesting. They love to explore different materials, build new things, and collaborate with one another on projects. They are funny and thoughtful. I am lucky to spend every day with them!
A priority for a 2nd grade student is to read on grade level so when they enter 3rd grade, they can begin to read to learn (instead of learning to read). My students need quality materials so they can use reading as a tool that informs and inspires their interests and passions.
Please consider supporting these wonderful students in their educational journey.
My Project
I've chosen books for my students that will tell stories of how other people live and affirm the ways my students live. I've choses books that reflect some of the communities my students come from and I've chosen books from communities that my students know little about. Requested titles include The Day You Begin, Dreamers, I See You, Little Night/Nochecita, Sea Prayer, Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras, My Heart Fills With Happiness / Ni Sâkaskineh Mîyawâten Niteh Ohcih, Windows, and A Different Pond.
As 2nd graders, my students are curious and open to seeing all the ways a person can 'be'.
With these books in our classroom library, our class will be able to read and learn together in a positive and affirming way. Sharing our stories is how we build stronger communities and these books are part of that process.
