Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade language arts and history at a Title I school in California. My students are active, enthusiastic, and excited to learn! I am so proud of how they are able to build ideas off of one another and look out for each other.
Although many of my students have already faced great challenges in their lives, they have proven to be strivers.
I am constantly reminded that they have so much to contribute when they are given the right tools to express themselves. My students and I are working together to build a collaborative community built on a foundation of respect and empathy.
My Project
It's not uncommon for classrooms and school supplies to look a little worse for the wear around this time of year. I want to communicate to my students, both explicitly and implicitly, that they are important and their learning matters. I want to show them that although some of our supplies have given up on us, I'm not giving up and they shouldn't either!
This project is an amalgam of different needs that have come up in the past month.
One important need is headphones. The last of the set of pre-loved headphones that was donated to me earlier this year has met its final end. English learners and special needs students need headphones to access speech-to-text technology that helps them keep up in reading. I also like to offer students the privilege of listening during independent work time if they have no missing assignments. This is a big motivator! But some of my students do not have their own headphones and can't afford to buy any.
Another important need is light. In my classroom, I have to have the lights off in order for students to be able to see the projector. However, it is very dark in my room without the lights on. I need these lights so that students can see well enough to complete work while I lead an activity using the projector. I had bought a strand of lights earlier this year, but they have given out on us.
The third category of items you will find in the project is snacks and candy. These will be treats students can earn for themselves through their hard work. Students earn coupons for meeting expectations, which they can spend on many different rewards.
