Where do I even begin? Kids are amazing! We are all stuck at home, forced to access our education through a computer screen. Our students are demonstrating such resilience; accessing their learning environments with such grace despite the global pandemic which has turned their lives upside down.
Let's stop and think for a moment though.
Aside from the physical touch and personal connections that are limited in this learning environment, our students are also missing out on the fine art of holding school supplies and learning manipulatives in their hands.
My Project
A lot of my students do not have access to necessary school supplies including paper, scissors, pencils and crayons or markers. Additionally, we are not affording them the opportunity to use their hands in a way they normally would in school; to touch and manipulate objects to learn. We all learn in several different ways; through seeing the information, through hearing the information and by touching and doing the work. While virtual learning offers some very unique and affective learning opportunities, we still need to challenge and strengthen the little hands of these budding minds! The tasks bags I want to create will do just that! I want to create bags for my students that will have the tools they need to learn through doing! By creating with Play Doh, stringing beads, building with popsicle sticks, and picking up pom poms with tweezers, our students will keep their hands moving and growing while learning.
