Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have 8 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

My students have varying levels of difficulty with fine motor skills. I want to create bins that we use every week to work on fine motor skills. The activities from this project will create a variety of activities that will be placed in bins to allow students to work on strengthening the muscles in their hands to increase fine motor skills.

My students are superheroes despite the difficulties they have accessing the world around them and they work very hard every day.

I want them to have as many opportunities as they can with a variety of activities to practice skills they are working on. The majority of my students are working on tracing and copying letters. They are not able to write independently due to difficulties holding a pencil and weak muscles in their hands. Having fine motor bins will work on strengthening those muscles so they will eventually be able to improve with writing skills.

The bins will include ripping paper, using tools to pick up objects and placing them in a container, putting objects together, using magnets to pick up objects, stacking objects and unscrewing/screwing pieces apart and together. Students will use the tweezers, scoopers and other fine motor tools to pick up a variety of the different animal counters to place in a container. Students will use the alphabet acorns to practice taking the lids off and working on an academic task. The dinosaurs will also be used to practice taking objects apart and put back together. The magnet activities will be used to pick up a variety of objects and work on science skills. Using a variety of engaging hands on activities will keep students focused on the task and work on increasing their fine motor skills.
