I work in a special education classroom and I have a wide range of students with different disabilities who come from a low income area. They are the hardest working students, they work on math, language, reading, science, and motor skills. They also go to the general education classroom to work on social skills, following directions and building independence.
My students have big hearts and are friends with everyone.
Everyday when my students get off the bus they have the biggest smile and they are so excited to be at school. They work on being good leaders by waving and say hi to every student and teacher in the hallway. One of the best things about being a special education teacher is that I have these students for a couple of years and get to see all the progress they make.
My Project
The materials I have selected are to help my students to develop and improve their fine motor skills. Fine motor is the small muscles in your arms, hands and fingers. It also involves working on hand eye coordination. We use fine motors skills everyday for writing, getting dressed, feeding ourselves, counting money etc.
These materials will be used everyday and will help my students to become more independent.
My students will have a certain time to work on them but they can also be used as independent work when they are done with their group work. With these activities they will improve the muscles and coordination in their hands and fingers and their finger dexterity. While they are working on these fine motor activities we can also work on generalization skills like shapes, colors, and counting. Because I am a special education teacher I will have most of my students for 3 years I can watch the progress my students make as they use these materials.
