This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. - Fred Rogers. My students are very creative and eager to learn! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that are interesting and hands on!!! They are very active and learn best through engaging in hands on "play" type activities. My school is in Saginaw, MI a city who like many others, has been heavily affected by the pandemic.

Secondary to the pandemic, many of my students have spent the last 1.5 years of learning at home, on virtual instruction and this has limited their ability to engage in hands on experiences.

They come from low income households, and the majority of my schools qualify for 2 free meals a day based on income requirements. Often basic needs are a challenge for these families to obtain, so educational toys or experiences are not available at home. In addition, many of these children have diagnoses such as ADHD, ASD, or CI. It is my hope that we can enhance their learning and fine motor development through exposure to play experiences they may not otherwise have.

My Project

In my project, I will provide various kits for teachers to use in their rooms as a way to build fine motor skills while incorporating learning objectives. Activities will include, paper punching numbers, lacing spelling words, or using playdoh to form various letters just to name a few.

All of these activities will focus on specific skills which are used every day in the classroom, while still progressing with the established curriculum.

They will also be able to MOVE during these activities, versus sitting at a desk with a pencil, which is challenging for children who may have learning differences.
