Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is the only school in the Santa Fe Public Schools which is dedicated to educational programming exclusively for 3- and 4-year-old children. The school gives priority placement to students who are identified as needing special education services.
My students' curiosity and drive to explore the world around them inspire me every day.
This year, I have two half day class sessions, with up to 15 students each. Our site currently has about 150 students. Many of our students have individualized education plans and benefit from related services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, or speech therapy in our school.
My Project
This year, we are seeing a drastic increase in fine motor delays due to the pandemic. This year, I also have some students in my class with significant developmental delays. This project is aimed at providing lots of fine motor enriching toys and activities for children to use throughout the school day. The Potato Head toys will be used to work on fine motor skills, feelings, and naming of body parts in small groups.
Some of the toys in this project will provide students who are more significantly delayed with play opportunities at their individual levels, while allowing them opportunities to practice the foundational skills.
