My Students

The students in my virtual class are deaf and hard of hearing. Some have additional disabilities as well including autism, blindness, intellectual, and motor disabilities. We use both spoken language and sign language as well as picture communication. Many of the students are just starting to acquire language and it is their first time ever in school.

Supporting parents to create a language environment rich in communication between children and their families is my goal.

I am learning to do this with a virtual classroom with full access to curriculum through visually accessible communication and hands on projects for families to do together.

My Project

My deaf and hard of hearing students are sheltering in place at home during a critical time for language and fine motor development. In order for them to develop the fine motor skills necessary for sign language as well as learning descriptive language and hand eye coordination, they need materials which will develop their comprehension, dexterity, and strengthen their hands.

I will be sending virtual art lessons to my students to complete with their parents requiring them to listen and watch, follow directions, and create something they can talk about.

The majority of my students do not have art supplies at home, are from low income families, and do not have access to art supplies.
