I teach first grade at a large, urban district where resources are often scarce. We are an International Baccalaureate school with a mission to develop a community of respectful, life long learners, who use inquiry, critical thinking, and problem solving skills, to be socially responsible contributors to a changing global society. My students are risk takers, thinkers, open-minded, and inquirers. I am working towards creating a classroom that offers them many opportunities.
Every teacher's dream is for their students to change the world and giving them what they need each day is a great start for them to fulfill that dream.
In first grade, students are still working on their pencil grip and their handwriting with both of these skills requiring strong fine motor skills. Without fine motor skills, handwriting can be a difficult task. Students do not have enough opportunities to work on their fine motor skills in this day and age.
Kinetic sand and play dough are excellent ways for students to develop and work their fine motor skills.
I will know they are working out their fine motor muscles and they will think they're playing! When students are able to work on and develop their fine motor skills, they will feel more comfortable with their pencil grip and feel better about their handwriting.
