I currently teach in a high poverty/trauma-impacted school with students on a Native American reservation. Many of the families on the reservation struggle to gain access to proper health care and this in turn affects their children. It is these children that are my students. Because of the effects of the disabilities that these students have, they lack skills that are essential to their daily lives.
The skills that you and I take for granted, are the life skills that my students need to work on daily basis to gain more independent lifestyles for themselves.
When these students are able to gain skills towards more independence they are empowered. This empowerment flows into all areas of their lives, not only in school, but also at home and interacting with their families and their peers. These amazing individuals are resilient and work towards their goals of independence with determination.
My Project
Because all my students are impacted by struggles with fine motor skills, they need opportunities to strengthen and build those skills. Meaningful and engaging activities will provide the students with ways to practice their these skills. Work activities, games and even cooking activities provide avenues for the students to not only practice their skills, but more importantaly, they learn that they can use these skills in all different areas of their lives.
A variety of materials can be broken down to develop work tasks and activities that students can do independently and with support.
Students will then practice daily with activities designed to bridge all areas of their lives to assist them with being more successful. When their fine motor skills become strengthened they can become more independent and empowered in their lives.
