Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I just got back from a workshop and I am so excited! The workshop was about developing fine motor skills to help students with their handwriting. As a first grade teacher I hear a lot of students complain that they are tired of writing or that their hands hurt. I always thought these students just didn't like to write, but today I have been educated. Asking some students to write for a long period of time is like asking a beginning runner to run a marathon: the muscles have just not been developed yet. How is a runner able to run a marathon? They practice, slowly building their muscles. At my workshop today the teacher talked about simple center you can create to build up the muscles in their hands. I want to finish this year strong by starting to build those fine motor skill now before they go on to second grade. I also want to start next year off right, and start these centers from the first week of school. This proposal is for some of the basics to give my centers a good start. Stamps to be held with the thumb and index finger, beads to string, wikki stix to bend with their thumb and index finger, and gel boards to practice their writing. The best thing about this project is I can use it over and over again.
