My classroom is filled with energetic first-grade students that are curious about EVERYTHING! We work as a classroom family to support academic and social growth for all.
My students thrive on hands-on, active, engaging lessons that challenge them.
We come to school each day to BE BOLD, BE BRAVE, and BE AWESOME! We push each other to try new things and to never give up. Most of my class come from families dealing with poverty. Many are struggling with drug abuse, mental illness, incarcerated family members, and sometimes homelessness. I have families that are working hard to end generational poverty and gain further education for themselves. Many of my students have single parents or are being raised by grandparents. These are all things that sit on the shoulders of my students each day as they come into the classroom. They truly face a daily struggle just getting to school and then work hard all day as learners themselves.
My Project
Having K'nex, Magna tiles, magnets, and other hands-on materials will provide my class with engaging tools to improve fine motor skills. While discovering and engaging in STEM activities, my First Grade students will also be building strong social, emotional, and problem-solving skills. The use of STEM materials will also support our core curriculum and provide student-centered learning.
Materials that provide a rich environment for discovery and exploration encourage the natural curiosity that my students have and support team building.These materials encourage creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills all through play.
Engaging in the development of these skills provides essential opportunities for future learning.
My class needs every opportunity to increase fine motor and social skills. These materials will provide us the benefit of both.
