This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
ALL WORK AND NO PLAY...NOT EVEN ART
I teach 7th and 8th grade reading and language arts at an inner-city school.
My poor 7th and 8th grade students have been preparing for the state's standardized test since school begin in August. In our classroom there have been countless stories, articles, passages, questions, and assignments. My students would fall in love with a story, character, or setting and could not express themselves about it because we had to quickly move on to another tested benchmark. I promised them that we would have loads of fun once the testing was over in March. My principal has forced every teacher to agree that there will be absolutely no testing or work that resembles the test.
We would greatly appreciate paint, paintbrushes, and construction paper. My students have expressed extreme interest in reading poetry and short stories and creating artwork that matches the theme of those written works.
My students deserve a chance to express themselves and their love for reading through art.
