Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income district, it quickly became clear to me that my students are facing a lot of adversity and challenges outside of the school walls. When they come to school, there is value in having an engaging and challenging curriculum, but even more so, there is value in my own personal consistency with the students and ensuring they are welcomed into a clean and safe place.
These students, who it sometimes feels the world overlooks, are brilliant.
Brilliant each in their own way. I have students that are brilliant artists, readers, leaders, and debaters. Others have a gift with music or numbers. I've even noticed some have an enormous capacity to empathize with others and love those around them. All of my students have something to offer and bring to the table, but they all share one thing: they need support.
My Project
Plain and simple, a pencil sharpener is something essential for my students to have success in my classroom. Broken pencils should be a quick fix, not something that deters learning.
If students are unable to sharpen their pencils, then they cannot progress in their assignments.
When my students begin to fall behind, they become incredibly frustrated and can even give up. Having a pencil sharpener would solve this problem for them. We had a wonderful pencil sharpener fall and break, so I have added velcro strips for additional support. As for pens, this will be beneficial as we start to teach writing and the editing process. If students are able to color-coordinate their editing strategies, this will improve student engagement and retention with these strategies. I love for students to visualize and interact with their writing and these pens will fully accomplish that.
