Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My eighth grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. My students continue to work hard each year and thrive in a learning environment that nurtures creativity.
In my district, over 80% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
This means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
Teaching students to better understand every day math skills is essential. My students are eager to explore the world of math especially when exploring real world situations and dreaming about their own future.
My Project
With the strict standards and ever increasing fullness of mathematical standards in middle school, financial literacy is often neglected.
Games like Monopoly make learning math skills fun and engaging.
My students earn reward day about once a month. These games will be available for them to play during their homeroom period and during reward day, so they can be exposed to real life math situations.
The Financial literacy cards and calculator are so my students can begin looking at the stock market, credit card pros and cons, and real world math situations through class activities like balancing a checkbook and college costs.
Last year, I had my students do a "mock" living cost analysis. In this activity they choose a career, a college if needed, an apartment and all the costs associated with the apartment. It was fun to hear them justify why they didn't need a car or how they could forgo the cost of a phone because their parents would pay for the cell bill. They were surprised to discover that their parents did not have the same plan. It was a very eye opening activity for many of my kids.
