Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our elementary school is located in a small, rural community. We have one High School, one Junior High, and fiv elementary schools. Our school community is 84% Hispanic and 90% Free/Reduced-Price Breakfast and Lunch.
Since I teach first grade, we are the ones that lay the foundation for our students to be successful in the following grades.
In first grade, they are like sponges; they want to absorb all the information they can. They love learning new things in all subjects.
It is my goal and job to give them access to the world within the walls of our classroom. We do this through group projects, S.T.E.M. Fridays, computer based programs, and just being able to ask "why" to the classroom teacher.
My Project
Every Friday, my students have a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) Challenge. We build card towers, Thanksgiving tables that will hold our feast, and so much more. STEAM helps students to get their brains thinking outside the box.
My students look forward to STEAM Fridays.
I look forward to seeing their creative sides while working in small groups. It is one of the most gratifying parts that we see as a classroom teacher. Students excited about challenges and learning.
We are slowly building up our STEAM materials for our classroom. Our classroom will use STEAM books for more ideas and the colored paper, copy paper, and laminated pouches to create our STEAM task cards. We will be able to use these materials for years to come. Through this grant we will have some much needed materials.
