I am a science teacher in a Title I school. This means my students are from low-income communities and their school is underfunded. For some, school is the highlight of their day because it brings them to a stable and safe environment. Some have expressed interest in pursuing careers in science. Others are struggling to grasp the subject matter and could benefit from a different approach to learning. I am hoping that laboratory exercises will be memorable, foster a love for science and help to reinforce lessons taught in class.
Having grown up in poverty, many of my students are driven to improve their lives by finding stable jobs.
They are highly motivated to better themselves and find careers that they love. These laboratory materials would allow them to further explore science and decide whether a field in science or the medical industry suits them. My students consistently ask if they can do dissections, and I have only been able to show them images thus far due to a lack of funding. This experience would allow them to learn whether they can handle the gore of medicine, as well as get them excited about the field. Laboratory projects would also give them more independence and teach them to think on their feet. My goal is not only to teach them the scientific material, but also prepare them for life outside of high school.
