Finding Ourselves Through Novels - We Are Not Alone!

Help me give my students novels to read that have storylines and characters that look similar to them and deal with situations that they are experiencing so that they know that they are not alone!

My Project

My students have a passion for reading. Unfortunately, the current choice books they have in my classroom library were cut in half over the past few years due to the books being sent home to my virtual students.

These books will significantly impact these students because they can relate to the topics, cultures, and situations.

These students have experienced so much at such a growing time frame in their lives. They've survived a pandemic, they've lost loved ones due to diseases, they've been forced to relocate and sometimes go without a home due to parents jobs being eliminated. My students mental health has taken a major hit over the past few years. I feel that reading about minority students going through some of the same experiences that they have gone through will help the healing process and help them realize that they truely are not alone.

I want to see the excitement in their eyes when they can choose to read a book that interests them and empower them to keep forging ahead. I may only teach 6th grade, but I have former students coming to check out books from my library, as well, as many future students that have heard from their older siblings will pop their heads into my classroom to see if they can check some out too!

Students can check out books from my library to read in their free time and when they finish their work early. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunity to read.
