My students are hard workers, focused, engaged and high achievers. They are quick learners and good listeners. They love seeing themselves in the books they read.
They are more than their academic lives.
They're loving, supportive, genuinely kind to each other and truly a gift.
Our classroom is a place to connect with each other, to read together, work together and understand what it means to collaborate with others.
Our first priority is our relationships with each other and then we focus on our learning because it is hard to learn when you're worried about your world outside of academics.
My Project
This year, we are focused on developing the habit of reading for pleasure to see reading as privilege rather than a chore. There are so many things competing to get students' attention, so they need books that are enjoyable and engaging. They need books that they can see themselves in, books that they connect to. books that mirror their lives.
This selection of books will add new genres to our classroom library, generate interest and affirm students as they see characters like themselves on the pages.
We will share these books across all of the 6th grade students, join in books clubs across classes, and have rich and powerful discussions.
