Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an English as a New language teacher I am always amazed by the diverse group of students I teach every year. These students come from all across the world like the Dominican Republic, Yemen, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan and different countries in Africa.
Most of these students are learning English not as their second but often as their 3rd or 4th language.
Aside from learning a new language, they often face a culture shock. This is often caused by social issues that they are not aware of, like being of a different race, religion or ethnicity.
My Project
Life for an English Language learner can be difficult when they feel like an outsider in a new school and a new country. That is why it is very important for students to see themselves in books! Through the use of these diverse books students will be able to learn about each other's culture, language, family, identity and struggles.
There is never a "right time" to talk to students about social issues, but to never address these topics is an injustice.
I have carefully chosen these titles to include characters that represent the students and families in my school community. These titles cover a variety of topics like; police brutality, Immigration, Poverty, Homelessness, Single parent families, civil war in the middle east and hiding who you are after 9/11.
I believe these books will make the transition for an English Language Learner easier because they'll be able to see themselves in a book. Reading how these character are able to overcome their struggles will give them the confidence to do their best. It will give them hope, that they aren't alone in this world!
