Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The seventy or so humans that I'm blessed to associate with every day are a uniquely talented group of Sixth Graders. They want to be the difference they believe this world needs and can't wait to get started. I see potential that many of them can't begin to glimpse.
Like so many other students, my Sixth Graders find themselves at the mercy of a Title I school, with giant ideas and even bigger plans for the future where the lottery of success may or may not be in their favor.
Unfortunately, my students' passion for Dreaming Big doesn't always connect to the skills they are required to learn during their Sixth Grade year. Many struggle connecting with what they read because it isn't applicable to their lives or not interesting. Many of them ask "Why should this even matter to me?" My students deserve the chance to find joy in their learning and joy in reading.
My Project
As we in education prepare to be flexible at a moment's notice, not knowing whether we will be learning/teaching from home or in the classroom, one thing that remains the same is that students need to keep reading. My favorite thing to help a student discover is what kind of book they love to read. The more students that I've helped discover what their just-right book is, the more my library becomes thinner. I love letting students borrow my books. Sometimes they don't make it back from home, or sometimes a student begs me to let them keep it. I'm a sucker when it comes to giving students books. I almost always say yes. Because of this, many of my series are dwindling and are in desperate need of replenishment.
Students LOVE reading books that are in a series and books that they feel are written about kids just like them.
