My students need high quality and relevant graphic novel texts, Baba Yaga's Assistant ,I Am Alfonso Jones and The Witch Boy. Graphic novels allow students to practice multiple reading skills and can be more accessible to students.
The school I work at has about 1,400 students from a variety of backgrounds. Our school has a lot of diverse cultures and students at different reading levels. We have a large portion of our population on free and reduced lunch.
Students need the right tools to succeed.
My students want to learn and need the right tools and supplies to do this. Graphic novels allows the students to practice several literacy skills at once while also making reading more accessible to some of our struggling students. Graphic novels allow for students to increase their vocabulary and read rigorous texts with support. Having the pictures accompany the text allows students to work on improving their reading and text features skills.
My Project
I have asked for a wide selection of graphic novels to add to the classroom library. I want students to have access to stories that reflect people who are different from themselves and see the world through their eyes. To see how other people live and experience life. I also think it is important for students to see themselves in the books they read.
I want my students to see themselves in the books they are reading.
The graphic novel "Ghosts" deals with the difficult situation of having a sick sibling. I also made sure to include "Nimona" translated into Spanish to allow students who speak Spanish or who are taking Spanish to read the novel in a way that allows them understand the story or practice the language they are currently learning. Novels such as "I am Alfonso Jones" are culturally relevant and allows students to disucss and process current events.
I focused on books the students love to read and ones that focus on being a middle schooler. I want all my students to find books they connect with and that they see themselves reflected in.
