Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach sixth grade at an elementary charter school. My students are high-need, and the community is also high-need. The class is approximately 75% Hispanic. The students range from "New to the United States" to "My family has been here for generations".

I find that many of my students struggle with finding the right cultural balance. The students whose families have lived here for generations tend to shun their rich cultural background- while those new to the country try to hold on to what they have left and what they have known with everything.

By providing books in the classroom library that celebrate Hispanic heritage, I hope to begin to shrink the gap between groups of students. I hope to show that while they are all very different, they are also very much the same.
