Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students who attend CCHS are proud, brilliant, face more challenges than they should, and live in a part of the metro Phoenix area most people try to avoid. Geographically, our school is made up by a truly diverse community as we serve what is left of an old farming community in Laveen, historically Hispanic neighborhoods in South Phoenix, and parts of most dense part of the west end of Phoenix that has extremely low socio-economic status. Additionally, we serve Native American students who live on the Tohono O’odham. Many of my students face issues ranging from food insecurity to unstable home lives. I have several students this year who seem to be the primary care giver at home because their parents are working, in prison, have been deported, or just plain aren’t around. I don’t want to over-generalize about matters so serious, and obviously not all of the students at our school are victims of a poor environment, but as someone who has taught in a variety of school settings I find the challenges they face breathtaking.
My Project
Students need to write. 2020 has provided them ample opportunities to send emojis, copy and past, and even TikTok their way through a conversation. Help me to encourage real writing by donating classic, bound journals to my students.
As a seasoned classroom teacher this year has been humbling.
Thankfully, students’ desire to learn and express themselves has helped me to overcome my own learning obstacles as I have slowly learned to use our online platforms for learning and building community. One challenge I’ve faced in teaching writing this year has been the mode – computers. It is hard to enforce having students write on paper, and in fact many students do not have basic supplies at the ready since most teachers do not require any type of writing without a key board.
Every year I observe students feeling protective of their ideas and proud of their writing achievements, and that has been especially true this year, where school feels more like a treat and less like a requirement. I want to show them how much I value their words and encourage them to value their own writing by providing each student with a beautiful journal that will last beyond our current year of disrupted learning. My hope is that by having a journal they will actually interact with a pen and paper, not just a keyboard. Further, I want to them to view writing as a life long skill they will hone outside of our class and beyond this school year. Help me show them their words, thoughts, stories, and voices matter by providing them with a journal that is not just sufficient, but magnificent.
