Imagine creativity, spontaneity, drive, excitement, and freedom within a classroom. What would this look like? How would the kids be acting? Where would their energy be focused? I hear these words and I think of the students that come to the music classroom every day excited to learn and make music. Music gives our children the tools to create, try new things, move, play, and socialize; and the students in my classroom are excited for these opportunities.
"We'll sing and be happy, because we're all here together again!" The students greet each other with this song at the beginning of every class period, and they sing it with content smiles on their faces.
For many of my students, school is a welcoming place where they can feel safe. Over 50% of my students are below poverty line. Many come to school with trauma either in their past or in their present. Weekly I hear of students being entered into the foster system, moving to new homes or homeless shelter, not eating supper, and not able to sleep because of family life. But these students show such resiliency. They enter my room and overcome so many obstacles in order to learn.
My Project
When a child sings, it builds self-confidence skills, helps them express their emotions, and builds speech and language skills. Every child has the ability to sing, but not all feel comfortable singing in front of their peers. Singing can feel intimidating and can become stressful; however, with the use of props, such as puppets, microphones, and the hoberman sphere, often a child's anxiety will lessen or disappear.
The manipulatives that were chosen for this project will help students find their voices in multiple ways.
We will have fun with high & low sounds, our 4 voices, singing songs, and learning how to perform.
