Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the honor of teaching some amazing kids. My students are full of life, love, and energy. Despite the challenges they face at home, and there are many, they come to school each day eager to learn and share experiences with others. Many families in our district struggle to meet the needs of their kids. A lot of my kids live in single parent homes or the homes of their grandparents. For some, school is the only place they are able to have consistency.
At ten years old, many of my students have had to experience hardships, through no fault or wish of their own.
When the students enter my classroom though, they enter with an eagerness and excitement that is contagious. You can't help but smile when you listen to their stories or watch their interactions when a buddy walks up beside them. They are authors of their own stories in my classroom. Although they can't change their home circumstances or background, school gives them an opportunity to make their own mark.
My Project
Fourth graders are active. I have a class of twenty four kids, two thirds of which are boys. Even with our varied activities that include movement breaks, my kids have a need to MOVE. By offering them Bouncy Bands, I hope to give them a quiet outlet for their wiggles when moving around the room isn't possible. When kids aren't worried about sitting still and are given permission to wiggle, they can focus on the task at hand. These bands will allow each student the flexibility to burn excess energy in a non-disruptive way. They could possibly offer a more comfortable position in which to sit as well.
