My students need a class set of Becoming Naomi Leon novels so they can understand personal narrative and find their student voice.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Teacher, can we read for five more minutes?" my students shout. I can't stop a smile from spreading across my face. This is why I became a teacher. I hope that I can instill this enthusiasm for reading, this thirst for knowledge, in all of my students by creating comfortable spaces for exploration through literature.
Our school is a magnet school, dedicated to The Arts and social-emotional learning.
The school is highly diverse, filled with students from all parts of San Diego and all walks of life. While many have encountered difficulties in their lives, my students' spirits cannot be crushed! They remain goofy song-lovers who enjoy group activities and learning about culture. They love learning about reading AND writing, and are currently working on their own personal narratives. We are lucky to have an excellent home-school-community connection. The students' guardians are extremely involved in the school and work to ensure their students are reaching their full potential. Overall, I can say we are a hard-working, caring community in need of more resources.
My Project
"Do you have any new books?" my student asks with a hopeful gleam in her eye. I feel my heart clench. I wish I could say yes. I wish I could support this student's love of reading. But sadly, I shake my head no. "Sorry, Ary," I answer. "Hopefully we'll get some books from the library this week!"
Your donation would give this student, and many more like her, the joy of holding a book in her hands.
Every day, we will use the class set of books to find examples of personal narrative writing strategies, look for character development, and use context clues to discover new words. In addition, these books would be great mentor texts that students can use to further their own voices. Finally, this would help my students with special needs focus on one text.
The text, "Riding Freedom," will encourage students to continue reading books by this amazing author!
