Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a school on the southwest side of Chicago. Our school has a large population of Latino students whose first language is Spanish. In the years I have worked as a teacher, the students I have had come in every day with a lot of energy, with many questions and ready to learn.
Fourth grade is a very exciting year for students.
Throughout the fourth grade, students learn to become independent learners. Furthermore, throughout the fourth grade, students become exposed to many different text genres and develop many reading and writing skills.
One of the very exciting things about being in fourth grade is that students become independent readers. By the end of fourth grade, students leave having been exposed to many different genres of books. They also leave the fourth-grade loving books and having learned new reading and writing strategies.
My Project
The school that I am currently working at is implementing the reading and writing workshop. The reading workshop requires that we asses students and find their reading level, this is done using running records. Running records help teachers measure students' progress and plan for future instruction. Furthermore, running records also provide a way for students to understand their progress, and communicate progress to parents.
Assessing students using running records is important for teachers, because teachers then create lessons catered to students needs.
Also, the data acquired is used so students can find books at their independent reading level, which students read for 35-40 minutes per day during reading. To add on, the reading levels acquired from the benchmark assessment are also used to organize students into different guided reading groups.
These materials will help make a difference in students learning, because assessments helps monitor students reading progress throughout the year and teachers are able to see students academic growth. Also, this assessment helps students get books at their reading level without any wasted time. Please consider donating to my project, having an assessment benchmark will help me progress monitor my students with ease and help me differentiate classroom instruction.
