My students need a wireless printer to be able to write stories from their teachers' rooms and send to me for proofing and publishing. The iPad would help with research.
"What can an iPad do?" asked my students. It's a marvelous connection to media all over the world. It can find information quickly and free. You can read books, magazines, and learn current happenings immediately. You can facetime, take pictures, and connect with apps that will broaden your writing.
My students come from the mountains of Tennessee.
Our school is Internet connected, but no cell phone service is available in our mountains, which makes research here very exciting. No student here has an iPad and have only heard of its wonders. Eighty-five percent of the students of our school eat free or reduced lunch, but our school received reward status in 2011-2012 and our English Language scores were even higher last year with 72 percent scoring proficient or advanced. The parents and community are very involved with our school and support the school with encouragement and attendance in all our school programs. Our students love to research, write, and perform.
My Project
My students research and write their own articles, plays, and short stories. They get to present their work each month in a school performance. The iPad would help students gather pictures, research, and connect to other people. The printer would allow them to send their work to me from their rooms so I could proof it, send it back for correction, and proof again. Then I could help them put it in book form for their presentations. The class is currently studying how to classify streams according to the creek creatures in the stream. Every month the school host a community school gathering so the students can present their work in pictures, writings, or art forms.
We have some talented young people in our mountainous East Tennessee.
Gifted writers and energetic students make for an exciting year. We hope that this project will allow our students to fulfill a dream of creating books of their own work through better research, pictures, and quality publishing.
