My Project

If I were not a science teacher, I would 100% be a forensic anthropolgist! Television shows like "CSI," "Bones," "Law & Order," and "Criminal Minds" were essential during my younger years, and today I love to spend time listening to true crime podcasts. The field of forensics has fascinated me for years, and as I teach more and more students, I find many of them share these same interests. It would be a dream to teach a forensics class as an elective, but until then, I would love to offer forensics as an after-school investigative club to my school's 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

Students are always curious about how how what they learn in science class connects to the real world, and being able to apply what we learn about chemistry, anatomy, genetics, physics, engineering, and scientific inquiry to a real-life career would help many of my students make a person connection to scientific topics that they struggle to find in our daily classes.

I find that students enjoy science much more outside the classroom where they can see a direct contextual connection. To help students to further this connection, I want to be able to bring in community assistance through our local sheriff & police departments, fire department, and medical examiner, hoping that they will lend their expertise and explain to students how the skills they learn here could help them out with future careers.

However, the start-up costs for equipment and curriculum guides is beyond what our departmental budget would allow and would be the one thing that holds me back. By providing funding for our first year start up, I would be able to further support the club through our school's science department budget from year to year as we replace supplementary equipment.
