Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend school in a low income community where school is the continuity that iinstills lifelong learning skills and problem solving strategies that can be applied in future endeavors. With the inclusion aspect of the public school setting, sometimes finding that one thing that all ability levels can reach success with is a challenge.
Offering alternative movement activities for those that are injured or unable to participate in class is important to me, because they need to feel connected and able to be a part of a group.
The connections to learning are often tough to see with physical education what I know is when a student experiences physical movement they are more prepared to enter the classroom to sit and readily learn with purposeful focus.
With physical education being my scope of focus in reaching students, I aim to truly instill lifelong fitness interests while making sure that fitness is a supporter of the classroom instructional process. Being active spurs the momentum students need to work on their academics with a vested interest to persevere.
My Project
The physical education program offers daily classes with students from PreK-Grade 5 where students are in a high needs area with low income.
Their high needs derive from the need to balance desiring to participate in PE but restricted with either an injury or physical impairment that takes some creativity to navigate.
The balance boards would help develop balance and coordination skills that challenge the mind with a maze or other challenges to complete while on the board.
Taking students old school with some basic games of bean bags, shuffleboard and curling are engaging activities that work in team environments with limited movements so that students can achieve.
I'm looking forward to dart activities as the students can work on their arm work with throwing objects with a focused target point. I can adapt this for my special needs students in terms of distance and height. I find all of these incredibly engaging opportunities to keep kids moving which is what Physical Education is all about.
